Bonebreaker

The Money Collector.  In ancient times before the age of Online Registration and pre-payment, one burly Volunteer was placed in charge of hounding down those who did not pay their dues for The Event.

Bonedigger

The Bonedigger started out in Chicago's North Avenue Beach in 1992 as a good excuse to take a Friday off work and enjoy the beach, play some ball, drink some libations, and catch some rays.  It has expanded into multiple festivities, centering around a Volleyball outing on Friday, affectionately coined "The Digger."   In Denver, The Event takes place on a Saturday at Garland Park.

Commemorative Bone

There are no official prizes in the usual sense.  First and Second Place Winners will receive the coveted “Commemorative Dated Bone,” and of course, bragging rights till the next year’s Digger.  The Bone features the names of past Winners.

Gold Star

Used to break Ties to get into the Playoffs.  Given to all who stay at the Pre-Party till after Midnight.

Grand Poobah

Grudge Match

A Denver Digger Tradition.  Not truly a grudge match per se.  At least one 6s or 4s match is played pitting selected players from the Denver Posse vs the Chicago Gang.  It is unknown whether any wagers are made, but at the least, the Winners get bragging rights till and the burden of defending the Title at next year’s Digger.

Hecklers

No true Volleyball Match is not accompanied by a supportive (or jeering) crowd.  Players who do not make it into the next bracket (when not lingering near the kegs and booze) will tend to congregate near the Nets featuring the players who have advanced.  Shy Players beware.  It’s something you will have to get used to, but it’s usually all in fun.

Hog Roast

A Denver Digger Tradition!  After a whole day playing Volleyball, a Whole Hog Roast with Fixin’s is gleefully consumed at the After-Party by the hungry participants.

Lord High Everything Else

A synonym for Grand Poobah.

Pairings Maker

Usually the MC of The Digger Event.  Utilizing some great wizardry and acute mathematical skills, The Pairings Maker(s) determines the partners for the next round.  Gold Stars (see above) tend to bedazzle and influence the Pairings Maker’s decisions.  It has also been speculated that bribery of some sort can also influence the pairings, but that is yet to be proven.  (See Tips.)

Poobah

The Grand Poobah’s minion.

Pre-Digger

The Pre-Party.  Attending the Pre-Digger helps Players to size up their opponents, get a feel for the "field," and score brownie points with The Event Officials (AKA Parings Makers).  Players who attend the Pre-Party receive a Gold Star on their record, and an extra Gold Star if the Player stays out past Midnight.  As everybody knows, the pairings are completely random, but statistics have shown that those who show up the night before have a 27% higher chance of getting a Past Winner as a partner in the first round.

Sausage Net

Sometimes The Digger does not get an even ratio of females to males signed up for The Event.  In this case, instead of Doubles the excess males have to play 3s or 4s on a net.

Volunteer

The success of each year’s Digger highly depends upon the hard work of its Worker Bees who labor behind the scenes.  (Click here for more info on how to volunteer.)

Voyeur

An affectionate term for a Buddy who is not playing Volleyball in The Event, but who has paid to participate in the fun festivities throughout the weekend.  The term originated from the Annual Mid Summer Night’s Blind Draw Volleyball Party at Coconut Beach, New Orleans.
